Diabetes in dogs requires a special diet of diabetic dog food; however, what most people don’t know is that if their dog had a proper diet to begin with, it is unlikely they would be diabetic.
According to Dr. R. Geoffrey Broderick, DVM:
“Every time a pet trustingly eats another bowl of high sugar pet food, he is being brought that much closer to diabetes, hypoglycemia, overweight, nervousness, cataracts, allergy and death.”
Dog Food for Diabetic Dogs – Don’t Believe The Hype
Though most dog food companies attribute a dog’s diabetes to genetics or eating too much in the way of table scraps, the truth is the grain base and high sugar levels of commercial dog food products can easily overload a dog’s system. In the last few decades, the emergence of canine diabetes and the need for diabetic dog food has markedly grown.
It would seem strange that the canine species, which has been able to thrive just on what Mother Nature has provided over the past thousands of years, suddenly could have such a health issue. Yet, when you consider that the vast majority of dogs are now on a commercial diet, the mystery loses its edge.
What is the Best Dog Food for Diabetic Dogs?
Luckily, there is a diabetic dog food that is wholesome, natural and healing for the diabetic dog: a natural diet. A natural fresh food diet composed of raw meats, bone and organs replaces the carbohydrates a dog’s body does not need and provides the proteins, enzymes, vitamins and minerals it does.
A dog put on a natural diet rebounds in its health simply because its system is finally getting what it craves to sustain itself. Dogs lucky enough to be on a natural diet from the beginning rarely have little worry of developing diabetes or any other health issue. Their lifespan is five to seven years longer than the national average and even their temperament is noticeably balanced and healthy.
The thing to keep in mind with even the best diabetic dog food is that dogs cannot sustain themselves on any food source that has been cooked and processed. Yet, that is exactly what diabetic food for dogs is. Since eating a high grain and sugar based cooked dog food is likely to have started the chain reaction that lead to diabetes, then a ‘special’ dog food that is cooked will still not be a good source of nutrition; even if the carbohydrate and sugar base is low. The fact of the matter is dogs and their systems were made to survive on a raw food diet only.
Homemade Diabetic Dog Food You Can Trust
Consider that, if commercial dog food were that nutritious then wolves, dingoes and foxes would surely have become extinct by now. The dog and its wild counterparts share the same digestive system to this day and yet they still thrive where they are protected while the domesticated dog comes down with a mountain of disease and is relegated to such things as diabetic dog food to survive.
Regardless of the propaganda, the physiological systems of any animal cannot adjust to a food source in a period of sixty years after millions of years of evolution. This is even apparent in the many diseases found in the human species that now denounces the chemical laden junk foods that so many insist on ingesting daily. Why would it not be the same for your dog?
