How to Heal Your Dogs Skin Allergies (recipe)

Dog with hot spot on forelegDoes your dog get any kind of skin allergies?

Dog skin allergies are linked to a diet that’s simply not doing a good enough job of giving your dog all the nutrition they’re body needs.

Yes, there’s environmental allergies, but they occur because a dog’s immune system is compromised by years of underperforming  diet!

Every one of the following skin conditions is linked directly to feeding a kibble only diet:

  • Demodectic and sarcoptic mange
  • Incessant scratching at an itch that never ends
  • Poor coat condition with possible greasy hair or dry brittle hair that’s coarse to touch, has a fusty odor or maybe some form of dermatitis appearing as red flaky skin or dandruff.
  • Ear infection
  • Excess shedding
  • Paw licking
  • Hot spots
  • Skin eruptions or lumps
  • Cracked dry nose
  • Yellow color in the whites of the eyes

Avoid vet prescribed antibiotics – here’s why?

Generally try to avoid the vet prescribed antibiotics or conventional drugs and disinfectants because they cause bacteria to mutate and become antibiotic-resistant.

Antibiotics from the vet also lead to gut flora die off as they don’t discriminate which bacteria they kill, good and bad!

This leads to further health complications, particularly yeast overgrowth and hot spots.

What to use to heal my dogs skin problems?

The combination of remedies that has proven effective is Oregano oil and Coconut oil.

Carvacrol inhibits the growth of several bacteria strains such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella etc. It’s also anti-pleomorphism, killing bacteria, fungi and viruses that have the ability to shape-shift and take on different forms within the body.

Two halves of an open coconutCoconut oil is good for your dogs skin. Because of its bacteria, fungus and virus killing properties, coconut oil helps maintain a healthy skin and coat and digestive system.

Coconut oil specifically contains a lot of medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs).

Those MCFAs carry a variety of health benefits and here are just a few:

  • Helps to clean bacteria in the mouth and promote fresh breath
  • Helps to prevent diabetes but also controls insulin by regulating it
  • It’s antifungal, antibacterial and antibiotic
  • It’s great for skin and coat health
  • It helps to balance the thyroid gland
  • Reduces allergies
  • Improves digestion
  • Helps to regulate weight by providing more energy

How to combine Oregano oil with Coconut oil to heal dog skin allergies

The rule of thumb is usually one teaspoon of coconut oil to one drop of pure oil of oregano. Simply mix the two together well and apply directly to the affected are daily until it’s gone.

You can make up a small batch to last months at a time, and now you’ll have it at the ready for various skin conditions, including stings and bug bites.

  • Add 4 Tbsp gently melted coconut oil to an empty jam jar or other small glass container you can easily dip your fingers into.
  • Add 12 drops oregano oil.
  • Mix them both together well
  • Use the cream as a topical antibiotic

Store in your kitchen cupboard and the mix will last for months and it’s ok if your dog licks it because it will continue to promote good health internally.

You can safely double the drops of Oregano oil (24) if a stronger application is needed for mange, legions, ear infection, yeast overgrowth and arthritis.

Do not use Oregano oil neat as it’s acrid and will burn and don’t use on pregnant or lactating dogs or have any allergy to thyme, mint or sage.

Remember to fix the underlying cause!

My dog means everything to meAs I stated at the beginning, it’s diet that led to the skin issues and while the Oregano oil and coconut oil recipe works great, it won’t stop the condition from returning if you change nothing about the diet.

    Dan,
Our Anatolian shepherd smelled strongly like corn chips therefore we’ve been treating a yeast overgrowth. We followed your recommendations for a probiotic and digestive enzyme powder daily. She also eats grain-free food supplemented with cooked chicken daily. The smell is much better but I want to get rid of the yeast completely. With this food regimen do we still need oregano/coconut oil? And if so, can we give it to her orally?

  2. Hi, can you use fresh oregano and add to meals? I think fresh oregano is safe internally? Would that be ok? Maybe Evan mix it chopped up with mct oil? Just interested in your opinion…….

    Thankyou so much……

  3. Sorry for such a late reply, just come across your question. I’d focus on fresh foods in the diet and keeping carbs anbd commercial pet foods very low to starve out the yeast accumulated in the body and to improve gut health and therefore immune health. Only use the oregano oil for infections of any kind and treat for 7 days then stop, 2 drops in 1tsp olive or coconut oil. I would not use coconut oil geberally though. Make the probiotic a soil based one as it’s better for yeasty dogs condition:SBO Probiotics. So add eggs, lots, canned sardines, fish, meats, organs and veg to meals and keep carbs low! Things will improve a lot going forward.

  4. Hi Deb, yes you can and I do.. at least in the spring/summer when it’s growing well. Good functional herb along with the others we usually eat.
