A common question dog owners ask their vet is: why is my dog lethargic? The answer they get may be anything from illness to injury to dog depression. Yet, when all the expensive tests have been run and there is still no answer, the mystery becomes even deeper.
Sick Dog Lethargic and Not Eating Their Dog Food?
There is nothing worse than watching a canine companion struggle with a lack of energy and the condition is likely to continue unless a pet owner decides to take a good look at the diet their dog has been eating.
The vast majority of dogs that are sick or suffer from an unexplainable lack of energy do so because of the commercial dog food diet they eat. Not only does it contain a host of preservatives, additives and chemicals that have absolutely no nutritive value, there is also little nutrition to be had for canines when a food source is comprised of waste foods.
As stated by leading dog-health author, Ann N. Martin:
” Animal protein’ in commercial pet foods can include diseased meat, road kill, contaminated material from slaughterhouses, fecal matter, rendered cats and dogs and poultry feathers. The major source of animal protein comes from dead-stock removal operations that supply so called ‘4-D’ animals: dead, diseased, dying or disabled to ‘receiving plants’ for hide, fat and meat removal.”
Your Dog is Craving Some Fresh Food for Energy and Vitality
It is highly doubtful that this is the diet Mother Nature had in mind for the canine species when she developed it over millions of years. Yet, this is the source of food that many of today’s canines subsist on. With this kind of junk coursing through its body each day, asking the question why is my dog lethargic and not eating almost seems silly.
Since the physiology of dogs was never designed to gain nutrients from cooked foods, a perfect balance of nutrients can never be obtained with commercial dog foods. This is because all commercial dog foods are cooked over high heat in order to package it into bags and cans; and high heat destroys and irreversibly alters any nutrients a dog’s system might have found useful. Even when vitamins and minerals are added to a dog food formula, it is often in chemical forms a dog’s body still cannot use.
The Natural Physiology of Canines Will Always Require Natural Foods
Pet owners that feed their dog a diet of raw fresh food never ask why is my dog lethargic. With this natural diet that contains live enzymes, phytochemicals, antioxidants, flavinoids, vitamins, minerals and a full range of over 35 proteins in their most natural form, a dog has all the nutrients it needs to keep its system in perfect balance.
To keep from having to ask why is my dog lethargic ever again, feeding a diet of raw meat and bone is a must. Once a dog has the live enzymes that transport nutrients to all the right places effectively and efficiently, pet owners will be able to watch the energy levels in their dogs markedly increase within weeks. A diet of fresh food gives a lethargic dog the active life they deserve.

My dog is very lethargic, seems to have periods of hard breathing, is off balance, stopped eating but is still drinking, she is responsive and does still urinate, she hasn’t had a bowel movement in two days. The vet isn’t in until tommorow and I would like to know how to help her until then
Deanna, hi and welcome to the site. Sorry to hear about your dogs problems. It’s difficult to know without a case history, something I go through with all my coaching clients. Hopefully you kept your dog drinking, no food is good, no stress, massage if nervous/shaking/fearful. There is more I could add but by now your probably about to see your vet. Please come back to me with results of visit, we can develop a time/diet plan to get your dog back to full health again if you seek a quality long term solution
All the best, Dan.
My dog hunter(male) he is acting the very same behavior as deannas dog. What is good diet to put him on to keep this happening. Ps. He is going to veternarians today
Hi, I never had a reply to get some veterinary observations re Deanna. However without any case history on your dog and only for educational purposes I highly recommend you get your dog onto a raw food diet. This will clear up many of your problems as I feel the present diet is depressing the body systems and will lead to bigger problems down the road. Get started today befor it’s too late.
